GLITTER is supplied in a two parts: a .zip archive that can be downloaded from this website, and a second component that will be supplied via email on receipt of payment and licencing information. Both components are required for GLITTER to operate. At the time of writing, the current version of GLITTER is 4.5, and the supplied version of IDL is 8.5.

GLITTER licencing

A query routine (lmtools.exe) will be sent to you during the GLITTER purchase process, or can be downloaded here. This is used to retrieve information from your PC to allow GLITTER to be properly licenced. The instructions for running lmtools.exe are as follows:

  • In order for lmtools.exe to be able to retrieve the correct information, your system must have a properly-configured network interface card installed (It does not need to actually be connected to a network).
  • Run the lmtools.exe application on the PC you intend to use for GLITTER. The LMTOOLS dialog appears.
  • Select the “System Settings” tab.
  • Click the “Save HOSTID Info to a File” button, then save the information to your desktop with the file name hostid.txt.
  • Send the hostid.txt file saved in the previous step to glitter@mq.edu.au. These details are required as part of the licencing process, and must be provided before the main GLITTER executable file (Glitter.sav) will be sent.
  • Downloading and Installing GLITTER

  • A username and password are required to download GLITTER. These will be supplied by glitter@mq.edu.au. For 32-bit Windows systems the download is here, and for 64-bit Windows systems the download is here. Please contact glitter@mq.edu.au if you have any problems accessing the download.

  • After downloading the .zip file, extract its contents to your hard drive. A suitable location is C:/GLITTER.
  • The installation is not complete until the Glitter.sav file has been added.
  • Adding the Glitter.sav file

The main GLITTER executable is supplied as a separate file named Glitter.sav, licensed to your PC. You will receive this file via email once payment is received and the output of lmtools.exe (see previous section) has been sent to glitter@mq.edu.au.

To complete GLITTER installation, copy the Glitter.sav file into the GLITTER directory on your PC (C:/GLITTER in the previous example). This is the directory in which files such as Glitter.exe, Glitter2.sav and Glitter.ini are already located. GLITTER can then be started by double-clicking the Glitter.exe file, also located in this directory. Note that double-clicking on the Glitter.sav file will NOT start GLITTER.

We suggest that you make a short-cut to the Glitter.exe file on your Desktop or Start Menu for convenience.

    Known Issue: ITTAutorun Error

In some cases, starting up GLITTER for the first time produces an ITT Autorun error (File not found). According to ITTVIS (the makers of IDL) this is because required system libraries are missing from Windows. They provide the following installers, which will install the required libraries if the correct versions (or later versions) are not already present. These installers will not overwrite later versions of the libraries.

For 32-bit Windows systems, download and run systemdll32_setup_81.exe.

For 64-bit Windows systems, download and run systemdll64_setup_81.exe.
