Profile

Elena Belousova is a Research Fellow in the ARC National Key Centre for Geochemical Evolution and Metallogeny of Continents (GEMOC) at Macquarie University, Sydney.  Previously Elena was an Australian Postdoctoral Fellow and then a holder of the Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor's Innovation Fellowship.

Research interests

  • broad surveys of the trace-element signatures of zircon and apatite in a wide range of rock types and mineral deposits, developing new methods that apply accessory minerals to exploration
  • in situ U-Pb age dating of zircons using the laser-ablation microprobe ICPMS
  • the Nu Multicollector ICPMS for in-situ analysis of Hf isotopes in zircon
  • the TerraneChron® methodology development: the integration of different techniques obtaining U-Pb age, Hf isotope and trace-element composition on the same zircon grain, and interpretation of these signatures in terms of crustal evolution history
  • TerraneChron® collaborative applied studies with BHPBilliton, WMC, Anglo Australia, Codelco and Stockdale, including projects using detrital zircons to study crustal evolution in the Yilgarn Craton and Mount Isa Eastern Succession, and exploration related projects in the Arivalli Craton of India and the Amazon Basin of South America
  • research work that includes the study on the processes of continental crust generation through time, and in specific tectonic settings on the Australian continent.

Current research

My current research aims to establish TerraneChron® (integrated U-Pb, Hf-isotope and trace-element analyses) as the industry-standard frontline exploration reconnaissance tool in appropriate terranes and to use the new relevant applications, methods and knowledge to better decipher the nature of crustal evolution and the geochemical fingerprints of geodynamic processes.
